World Ocean Day, celebrated on June 8th, is an annual event that raises awareness about the crucial role of the ocean in our lives and the importance of its conservation. This year, from the first weekend of June until August 4th, Devasom Khao Lak Resort will host an art exhibition titled “RESONANCE” by ceramic artist Pepe Adrian to celebrate World Ocean Day and raise awareness about protecting the ocean.
The exhibition’s concept revolves around the ancient knowledge of pre-Columbian “water whistle vessels,” which are sound instruments that have resonated across generations.
Devasom commissioned two special Ocean Day art pieces in the shape of a Whale Shark and a Sea Turtle, created by the Ecuadorian artist Pepe Adrian. These pieces will be up for auction during the art exhibition, with all income after deducting expenses being donated to the Thai Whale Foundation and Thailand’s Endangered Marine Animals Rescue Center.
Pepe Adrian, born and raised in Ecuador, has passionately devoted himself to his art of creating ancient pre-Columbian sound ceramic instruments. This is how the “Ceremonial Pacha” ceramic instruments project began.
Devasom Khao Lak, apart from sponsoring this ceramic art event, is setting up the first ceramic studio in Khao Lak, which will be open for free access to local artists and designers. The resort aims to inspire and provide a gateway into arts, culture, and product development for the local community.
The art installations will be on display at Devasom Khao Lak Resort from June 8th until August 4th, 2024. The Grand Opening of the exhibition on World Ocean Day, June 8th, features a special ceramic workshop titled “Ocean Incense Burner,” led by Pepe Adrian. Participants will have the opportunity to learn hands-on with the ceramic artist and create unique art pieces. The event also includes a special screening of documentaries about whales and turtles, as well as an “Ocean Whistle” ceremonial evening performed by Pepe Adrian.
Through this exhibition and its associated events, Devasom Resorts aims to encourage the growth of art and culture in the local community while raising awareness about the importance of protecting the ocean and its incredible biodiversity.
