Sustainability at Devasom Khao Lak

We believe in supporting local communities through promoting education and uplifting the quality of living. Apart from employing local residents and sourcing quality produce locally, our Devasom Scholarship fund and Devasom Khao Lak School Lunch Project are established parts of our mission as well. These Sustainable initiatives enable us to give back to the community for the long term. Bringing happiness and Sustainability to the community in which we are located is already very rewarding.

• Supporting local communities – Devasom Khao Lak aims to support the local community wherever we operate. This was demonstrated during the global response to the pandemic, which left millions unemployed. Devasom Khao Lak provided voluntary hands, food and hygiene supplies to local healthcare workers, public hospitals and temples in the community.
• Devasom Khao Lak Scholarship – Our annual, non-binding scholarship awarded to a student from the local Takuapa District of Phang Nga Province covers the full tuition fees of an entire bachelor’s degree program in any field. We believe in the importance of education and that by giving access to education to local young talents, they can further develop themselves and contribute to the development of the community they come from.

• Devasom Khao Lak School Lunch Project – Every academic year, Devasom Khao Lak Resort provides a school lunch fund to a nearby local school, where most boys and girls of the local villages study. In this way, we add a nutrition boost to the youth of the area who will grow to become the future of the neighborhood.
• Locally sourced ingredients – To nurture the growth of local businesses which help to support the residents, we always source quality produce locally, including from the nearby villagers’ farms and fishermen’s village. The freshness of local ingredients and the flavor of traditional recipes which have been handed down have also earned praise and awards for our dining venues.
• Employing local residents – Devasom Khao Lak’s extraordinary strength in hospitality comes from our competent local team. We hire and develop local talents because we believe in their potential. Throughout the years of the pandemic lockdowns, Devasom Khao Lak Resorts is one of the few luxury resorts in Thailand who maintained every employee on the roster. Our circle of happiness begins from the welfare of our happy personnel.

This position gives Devasom Khao Lak a degree of stewardship with responsibilities that we do not take lightly. Devasom Khao Lak has committed to Sustainable Tourism initiatives which preserve environmental health and ecological wellbeing. Our aim is to keep the environment impact of tourism as minimal as possible so that nature, which gives much to us, will flourish for many, many years to come.

• Reducing carbon emissions – We reduce our effect on the ozone  through sourcing natural produce from local suppliers, which also shortens the supply chain, conserving energy wherever possible.  We also use energy-efficient lighting and energy-efficient heavy appliances.
• Water Conservation – We are keeping water usage down through best practice and innovation, particularly with eco-friendly cleaning products that minimize the reliance on chemical detergents. Devasom Khao Lak also increases awareness through encouraging our guests to conserve water and energy, too.
• Minimizing single use plastics – Since 2012, we have rejected single-use plastics and opted for other more environmentally-friendly materials in all possible packaging material, including our drinking water bottles and tubes, food containers, and amenity bottles. We also work with our partners and suppliers to reduce the use of plastic in our supply chain.

• Waste and recycling – At Devasom Khao Lak we are not afraid to get our hands dirty for a good cause. We have taken on the task of sorting and recycling of all our garbage in order to recycle anything possible.
• Eco-friendly food management – We have carefully optimized the logistics and preparation of food. Nothing is simply thrown out. Our food waste goes to the local livestock farms.
• Engaging environmental-friendly products – The use of organic products allows Devasom Khao Lak to reduce the use of chemicals in our restaurants, all buildings and our garden. A major step was achieved with the produce from our own organic garden.

• Beach Cleaning – Every Tuesday the Devasom Khao Lak team hits the beach on a cleaning mission. This keeps everything as beautiful as ever and maintains the health and safety of sea life.
• Devasom Khao Lak Explorers’ Kids Club – The children are our future. We design our program to reconnect kids to nature with creative play, which gives them the chance to learn about how to protect our environment through hands-on activities.

Part of humanity’s treasure is in our diversity. We believe that celebrating differences and sharing unique aspects brings us closer together in appreciating the aspects of life we all experience. The traditions and cultural heritage of Thailand are beautiful and one of Devasom Khao Lak’s missions is to showcase the rich culture, unique arts and inherited wisdom of the community and surrounding locale.

• Representing local heritage – Devasom Khao Lak’s design represents the charms of a bygone era, paying homage to the historical port town of Takola, mentioned in ancient sources as one of the important places of business along the Maritime Silk Road that stretched from China to Egypt, part of the civilization which flourished here during the 6th – 8th centuries.
• Local traditions – Devasom Khao Lak provides support to the local community’s temple and shrine as well as to most of its festive events. One of our commitments to Social Responsibility is to ensure there will be a space in the future for the beautiful, rich culture of this area.
• Arts scene – Khao Lak is a charming environment for its growing creative community of the arts. We believe the arts are important expressions of the human experience that add value and beauty to our lives. Through organizing exhibitions, collaborations and festivals celebrating the arts, Devasom Khao Lak encourages the growth of local arts scene so that it may flourish in the future.

• Culinary Journey – At our award-winning Takola restaurant, we use only authentic traditional recipes. Our chef has sought out the inheritance of local recipes of Southern Thailand and brought them to our restaurant’s refined tables, to create an extraordinary culinary experience.
• Devasom Khao Lak Experience Activities – From ‘Vipassana’ Mindfulness sessions and Devasom Khao Lak Wellness Therapy to Muay Thai and Thai Cooking Classes, as well as Cultural Day Trips, our thoughtfully designed activities showcase the enriching wisdom of the East while also preserving it in transmission and experience.
• Local wisdom – We commissioned our long-tailed boat and had it built by local Krabi artisans to showcase the wisdom of the locals on how to build a traditional wooden boat which is not only aesthetically pleasing but can also endure the monsoon waves.
• Devasom Khao Lak Artisan’s Shop – Selected handicraft from local artisans and Thai designers is available here for sale. Through supporting local craftsman and artists, we contribute to age-old traditions so that their important perspective remains relevant, fresh and enjoyable.
